Travelbase Trails is for anyone with an adventurous spirit, eager to explore the world on foot.
We currently offer an unforgettable hiking experience on the beautiful island of Madeira. This stunning destination features unique landscapes and a welcoming local culture, ensuring a truly memorable journey. Stay tuned, as more trails may be available in the future!
Travelbase Trails was created by hikers, for hikers, with the mission of exploring the world through iconic hikes. Organizing your own hike can be challenging, so our routes, designed by experienced guides, offer well-balanced stages with stunning highlights in a short time. We handle all logistics (local transport, a mobile app, nature-based accommodations, rental of food packs and camping gear) and provide support from experienced guides and Rangers. All of this, at an affordable price.
You can either come with your own camping equipment or rent it from us. You will receive high-quality gear, such as a tent, sleeping bag, and mattress. You can also rent walking sticks and a cooking set. You will receive a packing list before your trip detailing all the necessary equipment.
The essentials include good hiking shoes (category A-B/B-C), a backpack (approximately 65–80L), possibly a daypack (about 40L), reliable camping gear, and protective (rain) clothing. Choose shoes that you feel comfortable enough in for a long trek. Prepare for the potential weather conditions on-site. Often, good waterproof clothing is an absolute must, and you shouldn’t forget a few warm layers as well. It can get quite chilly in the evenings. You will receive a detailed packing list well in advance, outlining all the necessary gear for the destination where you will be hiking.
Before the trip begins, you will have access to our mobile app, which features comprehensive details about all routes and points of interest. This will empower you to navigate the trail independently. Additionally, experienced guides will be available, depending on the trail, to offer essential information and assistance whenever needed.
You’ll find limited access to restaurants or supermarkets, so it’s important to bring enough food for the entire journey. You can rent a food pack that includes a cooking set (cooking pot, gas burner, and gas canister) from us, or you can enjoy dinner at the accommodations where we stay each evening. Don’t forget to pack your own water bottles; aim to carry at least 2 litres of water. You’ll have the opportunity to refill your bottles at the overnight locations or at streams along the route.
The Madeira Trail is a self-guided hike. This means that you will be hiking completely independently. We make sure that you have everything you need for a successful hike. Everything is organized for you, so you don't have to worry about a thing. All you have to do is hike and enjoy. An experienced ranger will provide you with a comprehensive briefing on the first day of the hike. They will then send you a daily briefing via message.
